# Multiplication rules explained with examples

Learn and know the multiplication rules in math which is to be used while doing multiplication. These rules are very important for calculations.

In mathematics, multiplication rules comes in the IV, V and VI classes. Actually, these are the classes where we learn the basic mathematics. If there is no strong foundation in lower classes then it is difficult to score good marks in class 10 or 12. So learning basics in maths is necessary. As a part of learning basic maths, now we will know the multiplication rules. Totally there are four multiplication rules that we need to learn and remember.

## The four multiplication rules are listed below:

– × – = +

+ × + = +

– × + = –

+ × – = –

The above rules are very important to find the product.

Example:

Find the product of -5 and -2

Solution:

The given numbers are -5 and -2. Now these two numbers we need to multiply to get the product. So for finding the product first, we should multiply the signs and then we have to multiply the numbers. The signs of two numbers if we multiply i.e. – × – = +. Now we multiply the numbers i.e. 5 × 2 = 10. Finally the product of the two numbers -5 and -2 is +10, simply we can say 10.

Find the product of 6 and -9.

Solution:

First multiply the signs i.e. + × – = – then multiply the numbers i.e. 6 × 9 = 54. Therefore, the product of 6 and -9 is -54.

NOTE:

Remember that for finding any product, first multiply the signs then multiply the numbers.

Hope that the rules of multiplication are clear.
