# Geometric progression definition explained

Learn and know the geometric progression definition in sequence and series chapter. In short form geometric progression is written as G.P.

In progressions we have mainly three types of progressions namely arithmetic progression, geometric progression and harmonic progression. Also we have arithmetic-geometric progression, in this both arithmetic and geometric progressions will be combined. Now we will know what is the meaning of geometric progression and we will learn the definition of geometric progression also. Arithmetic progression and geometric progression will have a little difference between them. If you what is arithmetic progression then you can know the difference. Anyhow go through the below given geometric progression definition and make a note of difference between A.P and G.P

## The definition of geometric progression as follows:

In a progression, if the ratio of the term to the previous term is always constant except the first term then it is called as geometric progression. If the terms are limited then it is called as finite geometric progression. If there exists unlimited terms then it is called as infinite geometric progression.

Example:

Let us consider 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 160, 320, 640. In this sequence we have limited or finite number of terms. So this progression is called as finite geometric progression.

4, 12, 36……………….. In this sequence we have unlimited or infinite number of terms. So this progression we call as infinite geometric progression.

Geometric progressions are two types, they are

Increasing geometric progression.

Decreasing geometric progression.

### Increasing and decreasing geometric progressions definition:

In the geometric progression, if all the terms are increasing order then it is called as increasing geometric progression.

Example:

2, 4,8,16,32

In the geometric progression, if all the terms are in decreasing order then it is called as decreasing geometric progression.

Example:

81,27,9,3

Hope that you have understood what is a geometric progression, geometric progression definition and types G.P and so on.
