# Exponent meaning in math explained

Learn and know what is the exponent meaning in mathematics and also know why we should learn this concept. In the middle class maths we get this exponent concept which has a great importance.

Exponent is also called as power or index. Whatever may be the name, the meaning is same. The main use of learning exponents is to write a very big number or a larger number in a simple way. So now we will see what is the meaning of exponent. We also learn how to write large numbers in the short or simple form.

Exponent meaning as follows:

If we want to multiply 6, 2 and 3, what we do? We multiply like this 6 x 2 x 3 = 36. But in some cases we may need to multiply the same numbers. For example, 3, 3, 3, 3 and 3. Five 3’s we need to multiply. Instead of multiplying and writing its value we can write as ${ 3 }^{ 5 }$ and said as exponential form of 3 x 3 x 3 x3 x 3. In this notation, 3 we call it as the base and 5 we call it as the exponent. I think now exponent meaning is clear.

Generally exponent says that how many times base should be multiplied. Let us take a example, in ${ b }^{ c }$ base is “b” and exponent is “c”. Here the meaning is “b” should be multiplied “c” times.

In the short form 6 x 6 x6 is written as ${ 6 }^{ 3 }$, where 6 is base and 3 is exponent.

If ${ 9 }^{ 4 }$ is given the meaning is 9 is multiplied 4 times i.e. 9 x 9 x 9 x 9.
