# Divisibility rule of 6 explained with examples

Learn and know what is the divisibility rule of 6? In mathematics learning all the divisibility rules of the numbers is very much needed.

Some of us having a doubt that when these divisibility rules will be useful? See when we are doing some simplification like let us take one ratio $\frac { 69 }{ 78 }$. Now this ratio we need to simplify both numerator and denominator we should cancel with some table. How to know, whether we should cancel by 2 or 3 or 4 or 6 and so on. So in this case if you know divisibility rules it becomes very easy to know by which number we have to do cancellation.

## What is the meaning of divisibility rule or test?

Divisibility rule or divisibility test is one process from which we can know whether a given number is divisible by any other number.

For example, let us consider the given number is 523. Now how to know 523 is divisible by any other number like 3, 4, 6, 9, 11, 14 …generally to know this we need to do division. Otherwise we need to learn divisibility rules of the numbers.

### The divisibility rule of 6 as follows:

To check whether the given number is divisible by 6 or not we should know divisibility rule of 6. The divisibility rule of 6 is given as “if any number is divisible by 2 and also divisible by 3 then we say that the given number is divisible by 6”.

Do you know what is the divisibility rule of 2 and the divisibility rule of 3? You have to know this because divisibility rule of the number 6 depends upon these two divisibility rules. So try to know that, it’s very simple.

For example, let us consider one simple number 66. It is clear that it is divisible by the numbers 2 and 3. So now we can say that 66 is also divisible by 6.

Example:

Check the number 256 is divisible by 6 or not?

Solution:

First check the number 256 is divisible by 2 or not and then check it is divisible by 3 or not. If 256 is divisible by both 2 and 3 then we confirm that it is also divisible by 6.

As last digit in 256 is even number so it is confirm that 256 is divisible by the 2.

2 + 5 + 6 = 13, as sum of the digits is 13 which is not divisible by 3 so we say that 256 is not divisible by the 3.

Even though 256 is divisible by 2 but it is not divisible by the 3 so finally we say that 256 is not divisible by the number 6.
